Can any one be called a gemologist?
Many people think they are a gemologist and it is a term that is thrown around frequently in the jewelry trade. At Herzog Jewelers, our gemologists have obtained the title of Graduated Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and Certified Gemologist from the American Gem Society (AGS). Both titles are only given after the person has taken various gemology classes and passed the final examinations. The Certified Gemologist degree is accredited by AGS and requires annual examinations to keep its title. It is important to deal with people that know the trade and stay active with the current trends and ethics in gemology.

What should I consider when purchasing a diamond?
When buying a diamond, the first thing you should consider is who you are buying it from. It is probably the blindest item that you will ever buy in your life. You really need to trust the gemologist that is showing you the diamonds. You need to think about how knowledgeable and ethical the jeweler is. At Herzog Jewelers, we belong to the American Gem Society and are Graduate and Certified Gemologist. We can help guide you on your purchase by explaining the 4 C's and finding the right mix of characteristics for your diamond. Many people have different ideas about what a perfect diamond is—some want size while others want rarity. Let us show you how the cut, color, clarity and carat weight determine the value and beauty of your diamond.

Do you custom make jewelry?
Making a custom piece of jewelry is something we specialize in. Custom jewelry is an easy process that involves taking a customer idea, then having a sketch drawn of the piece. From there we will have a wax carved and show it to our customer for approval. From that point, we cast the piece and set the stones. The process can all be done in as little as 10 days. If you can think of a piece of jewelry you have always wanted, our skilled master craftsman can take your vision and transform it into a piece of art.

Are your gemstones treated?
Just as a piece of furniture may need to be lacquered; some gemstones require finishing before they are ready to be sold. Treatments of various gemstones have become an integral part of the jewelry industry. Just like fine wines need to be aged and blended, most gemstone treatments used today simply facilitate the beautiful end result of the earth's natural processes. We will be glad to educate you and answer any of your questions concerning your gemstone.

What should I consider when buying pearls?
Key characteristics that affect a pearl's value and beauty are luster, smoothness and color. Luster offers the reflection of overhead light. Pearls with brighter reflection have higher luster. A smooth surface on a pearl is free of blemishes; however, small blemishes may not be visible at arm's length. The size, location and number of blemishes affect not only beauty, but also value.
Traditionally, the white cultured pearl that shows a rosé overtone was considered most valuable. Today pearls come in all shades from cream to black. The shape of the cultured pearl also affects price. Usually the more round a pearl is, the more desired it is. And finally, size is a factor. The normal range of cultured pearls is from 2mm to 8mm. So the larger the pearl, the more rare and expensive. Pick a pearl that fits your attitude and style. That way you cannot go wrong.

What should I consider when buying gemstones?
When considering a gemstone, usually the color is the most important aspect. Though color is very subjective to the eye. Therefore, some people may desire a more saturated tone while others may desire a paler tone. You should also consider the shape and cut of a stone. You always want your gemstone to seem fiery and alive. And finally, consider if the stone has been treated or untreated. How do I care for karat gold and sterling products?
The best way to clean karat gold or sterling jewelry is with a jewelry cleaning cloth. It has rogue on the inside that will restore the luster to your piece. Try not to use paper towels as they can scratch the metal finish of your piece. It is also best to keep sterling silver items in a zip tight bag so they will not tarnish and oxidize. We also welcome you to bring your pieces in and we can use our buffing machine to remove the scratches and restore the high luster finish.

How do I clean and take care of my jewelry?
The first thing you should do is protect your jewelry when it is not being worn by separating it from other jewelry using a separate compartment in your jewelry box. When improperly stored, gems and gem quality items can damage each other. For example, diamonds will scratch all other gemstones including rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Additionally, most gemstones will scratch karat gold, silver and platinum.
To clean your jewelry, a mild soap and water solution used with a soft brush (old tooth brush) is effective for most home jewelry care needs. Chemicals in some products can damage certain gems, such as pearls, even if they are considered to be mild. Even soft brushes used in applying cleansers can do damage to pearls. Soapy water cleans your pearls best, but avoid getting the string wet since it could stretch or break.
There are polishing cloths specifically for karat gold or sterling silver. Do not use paper towels; they can scratch the metal. If you are in doubt, please feel free to stop in and we will clean and check your jewelry at no cost.
